Park School of Communications' 50th Anniversary

Broadcast Media Communications at Ithaca College are nearly as old as Broadcast Media Communications, radio debuted in America in the 1920s and the first radio courses at Ithaca College were in the 1930s. Television was in full swing in the 1950's, with ICTV serving as Ithaca's local news station, Bob Iger did the weather reporting at one point in the 1970s. In 2023 The Park School of Communications at Ithaca College celebrated the 50th anniversary of the creation and naming of the school. Previously Mass Communication majors and courses were offered as part of other schools within Ithaca College. This celebration was, in many ways intended to celebrate the founders who made the school possible.

Students in the Communication Management & Design program were asked to run an event highlighting interactive media forms that ran parallel to the film, audio, and video being created across the decades. Students curated two spaces, one a history themed  panopticon of gaming from Pong to Virtual reality, the second a dedicated LAN Gaming experience. LAN Gaming was a signature gaming form of the late 1990s and early 2000s, at a time when players would physically bring computers together to play as the fledgling internet could not support their needs.

Above is a series of animated versions of the logo produced by students for monitors throughout our building. Below are photos from the event and instructional print materials designed to support attendees game play. Students in the 400 level course designed a short Identity Standards guide and students in the 200 level course applied those guidelines in making their materials.
As part of the courses STCM44000: Communications Design Lab and STCM212000: Interactive Media students produced motion graphics, instructional guides with other materials, and hosted an event in support of the Anniversary. Both classes are taught by Dr. Edd Schneider of the Communication Strategy and Design department within the Park School.
The Park 50th celebration was held the weekend of October 27th, 2023 across a host of locations.
